LN, I read a couple of academic papers about Shoal Creek archived down at the Austin History Center that pretty much exactly mirror your sentiments. It's this public space that's a free zone for kids and nature. The old timers were talking about the time that the dam up near Hancock Drive got drained and they found all these fish in there, including a koi.

Hope we get some rain soon. The creek needs it.

Came across your article while trying to figure out what kind of fish I found here in the north end of Shoal Creek (near Steck Ave.). By August, the creek had dried up into shallow pools of varying size. Some pools have quite a few sunfish, some about 6-8in long. The fish I found in a smaller pool, what I can figure, are Southern Plattys (I took one in, and it's doing fine in an aquarium). Seen plenty of snakes up here, too, mainly in the Spring. Yellow-bellied water snakes, but have also seen one (run-over) juvenile Rattler. Other wildlife: Red-shouldered Hawks, Yellow-Crested Night Heron, Blue Heron, loads of Redbirds, squirrel, possum and, in the winter, Great Horned Owl. My kid learns more about nature from the creek than what they teach in school.
